Can Handmade Glass Pendants Be Repaired?

So let's say you're putting on your favorite piece of glass jewelry, and you can't quite get that tiny clasp closed. Then it slips out of your hands, on to the floor, and is now in 10 different pieces. If only you could rewind that moment like 10 seconds and then it never would have happened....

Now I am working on inventing a time machine to fully solve this problem, but until then we have another option! Repair by your local trusted lampworker (me lol).

Now the ideal solution for any broken piece is to go to the artist who made it. They're going to know exactly how it was made and what materials it was made out of. If you don't know who the artist was, one option is to go on Instagram and start searching for other glassblowers using terms like "glass pendant necklace" or "heady glass pendant"

If you don't know who the artist was, the next best thing is to know what kind of glass it was made out of. The two most common kinds of glass used in glassblowing are borosilicate glass, and soda lime glass. If you don't know who the artist is or what kind of glass it is, it can still be repaired, however, there is a much higher risk of cracking as different kinds of glass react in unexpected ways to the flame.

Can Opal Jewelry Be Repaired?

Yes! However the more stuff you try to cram into a piece of glass, the more likely it's going to freak out and say no more stuff! So, the bigger the opal is the greater chance of it cracking in the repair process. Different glassblowers may have different policies for this situation, but in my case, there would be no refunds for something like this, so it's important to keep that risk in mind.

It's also important to know that opals themselves cannot be repaired. Once the opal cracks its hasta la vista baby.

Can Cremation Glass Be Repaired?

Memorial glass pieces can be repaired, although there is still the same risk mentioned above. However the risk here is much lower, as a crack in a blown glass piece with ashes can be fixed even if one is created during the repair process.

If you have a piece you want me to repair, you can contact me at dnlbourgeois@gmail.com
